Oxidation is a natural process. It happens whenever you turn on your car or use a flashlight. Batteries oxidize their electrons in order to produce voltage that we use in electrical equipment. Rust and fire are both results of oxidation. Just as batteries produce energy through oxidation, our own human bodies use the oxygen we breathe to oxidize energy in order to sustain life. As a result of oxidation, our bodies produce waste and “free radicals”, similar to how fire produces ashes, which have the potential to damage tissues and contribute to the formation of illnesses and cancer. This is the reason society is so concerned about consuming enough “antioxidants” to combat these free radicals.
Some antioxidants in our diet include vitamin C & E, flavonoids, resveratrol, lycopene, lutein, and carotenes. Foods high in antioxidants include fruits and vegetables, grains, nuts, meat, chocolate, cinnamon, and oregano. (10)
When you are dieting it is especially important to eat healthy foods. Your body will crave vitamins and antioxidants, and if you eat healthily your body will feel full and content and less likely to desire junk food.
